Unquestioning faith

February 23, 2010

So I was thinking about Mary this weekend. I mean the mother-of-Jesus Mary.

I like her.

She’s obviously a person who values goodness and righteousness to some extent (otherwise, why would God pick her, right?). So can you imagine what it must have been like to find out you’re pregnant as a virgin? How do you explain that one to your parents? Not to mention your fiancé.

And yet, as far as we can tell, she was totally accepting of the idea. Maybe the wild angel visit was enough to convince her that it really was going to happen. I mean, I’ve never been visited by an angel, but I can see how that would be totally convincing.

But do you think after the bright lights were turned off and all heavenly beings had disappeared, that she doubted at all? That between the time she got word and the time she gave birth, that she never second-guessed the whole thing? Just a little?

I think know I would have.

Because I’m far too concerned about disappointing my human counterparts.

Oh to have her kind of faith. And concern only for impressing (and not disappointing) the One who really matters.

I would have probably freaked out! I also love how it says that “all these things Mary took and pondered in her heart.” I want to be a ponderer (if that means someone who thinks about things and holds them dear?)…to be able to hear the Word read or preached and not forget it…but ponder it. I want to ponder the wonderful daily things that happen like my kids laughing in the other room or all of us sitting around at the table for dinner. I think the more we ponder the more we can be thankful.

I think that may explain why she went to visit Elizabeth, I mean besides her Cousin having a baby. Sometimes it is nice to just get away and find someone who might possibly relate. And not only did Elizabeth relate, she knew about it even before mary told her. News like that definitely needs the support of a good friend.

Great point Staci. Yes, I agree. And also, the fact that Elizabeth was having a baby after being barren must have been another “road sign” of sorts for Mary ensuring her that she really was going in the right direction.

Yes. I’m a ponderer…but not always of the good things. :)

Great post. Mary’s story has always intrigued me. It’s good to read someone else’s thoughts on it.

(First time commenting, I recently stumbled across your blog.)

Good point about visiting Elizabeth. I believe I would have been totally convinced once I realised I was pregnant. But 33 years later what would I have been thinking. Just this week we discussed Mary standing puzzled at the cross. Surely she expected her son to restore the kingdom to Israel. And it wasn’t happening. I believe I would have doubted then.

Yet surely her faith was restored at the resurrection. Is ours?

I love the story of Mary. Just think of what it must have been like in those times, in that culture, to be pregnant as a virgin. To have to tell your future husband and expect him to believe. She had amazing strength and courage, something that we all should be so fortunate to have in our faith.
