How to resize your images for free online

January 26, 2010

Picnik is a great online tool for image editing and it’s extremely user-friendly — no technical know-how required. To resize your image:

  1. Go to Picnik.com.
  2. Click “Get started now!”
  3. Click “Upload.”
  4. Choose the photo you want to use from your computer.
  5. Once it loads, click “Resize.”
  6. Make sure the “Keep Proportions” box is checked.
  7. Change your dimensions. (One way to figure out a good dimension is to determine what size your photos are when they are posted. You can find this out by pulling up your blog and right-clicking on a photo. Find “Image Properties” and you should be able to see the dimensions it is scaled to in pixels. Consider making it a little bigger than this figure if you allow people to click on it for a larger view.) I usually go for about 700 x [this will automatically fill in if the "Keep Proportions" box is checked].
  8. Click “OK.”
  9. Click the “Save & Share” tab.
  10. Name your photo, choose a format and save.
  11. Post as usual, but use this photo instead of the original!
