I hate stuff.

September 26, 2009

I spent several hours in the garage yesterday. (Let me just say up front that if I was a better person, I’d have before & after pictures. Sorry to disappoint.) I purged, I cleaned, I organized, I bagged up stuff to be donated, I created a small mountain of trash that needs to be put out the next time trash day rolls around.

Satisfying. That’s all I have to say.

I am in love with purging stuff because stuff gives me hives. (Words of my father to my children: “Your mom is the purgingest person I know.”) And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the course of my (somewhat) short life, it’s that brutality is in order. Sentimentality is generally not allowed. If it hasn’t been worn or used in [enter amount of time I deem appropriate here, which isn't nearly enough time for most members of the family], it’s gone.

So, this is what I overheard this morning: “Hey! Let’s go explore the garage!”

This is code for: “Hey! Let’s go see what mom’s getting rid of so we can make sure it’s not anything we want to keep.”

Yeah. Over my. dead. body.

I’m so with you on this! My biggest obstacle is finding a time to purge the stuff without three little bodies following me around. Our garage is a nightmare. It’s a miracle we can fit our car in there!

    Three words: Black. Trash. Bags.
White ones and clear ones simply allow others the opportunity to view what has been discarded and retrieve it before it can get to the dump.

    Fellow purging nut.

Oh yes, and you get the tax-deduction if you donate to a thrift store (non-profit) and ask for the receipt!!

I love this! It always feels so good, and it is overdue in our home! I can never do it in front of the kids because the forgotten “stuff” becomes their “favorite toy!”
