School days

Alright friends, there’s much going on in this house of ours. The most exciting (and time-consuming) has been the start of school last week for the oldest two and the start of preschool for #3 tomorrow! Whew! There’s a lot to keep track of!

OK, about our school. I’m very stoked about it and I think it’s going to work splendidly for our family. It’s a University-Model School — just a plain smart concept if you ask me. The kids go to school 2 days a week and are at home the other 3 days. As the name suggests, the idea is to mimic the way things happen in college. That is, for every hour you’re in school, you’re expected to complete a set amount of work outside of class.

For us, it sort of works out to be a nice blend of homeschool and private school except that it’s MUCH cheaper than 5-day-a-week private school (we can pick and choose which classes they will take), there’s very little wasted time in class (they have to move fast since students are there only 2 days a week) and we aren’t fighting the craziness that comes with school 5 days in a row every week.

The clear and stated purpose of the set-up is to help parents educate their children instead of handing over the education of their children to someone else (something I feel strongly about).

The flip side is that when they say they expect parents to be involved, they mean it! I have my own little “Parent’s Role” checklist on each of their assignment sheets. No slacking allowed!

Anyone else doing this?
