Do you watch TV?

March 13, 2009

Kat, from The Secret Life of Kat, wrote a great post about TV and what we watch.  I’ve found myself thinking about it quite a bit the last week or so, especially this (regarding sexuallyexplicit material):

Because here’s the thing – the girl on the screen IS SOMEONE’S DAUGHTER. And just because her parents didn’t place value in her (or because she never believed it) doesn’t make it right for me to be entertained by something that would break my heart if she was my daughter…

Her brokenness should not be our entertainment.

What I like about this statement is that we so often get into discussions about what TV does to us and rarely think about what it means for the person on the screen.

We’ve all got our brokenness, but I’m of the opinion that many (most?) actors/actresses in the entertainment industry are especially broken.  Acting is their way of escaping their pain.

I know from personal experience how liberating it can be to play a character on stage.   I loved being someone else for a while, because then I didn’t have to be me.

I am not anti-TV.  I do think, though, that we (I’m talking to my fellow Christians here) often just take it all in without giving it much thought.  I think we need to give it thought.

Check out Kat’s post, What In The World Are We Watching?, and then come back and tell me what you think!

Wow. I’m honored that post prompted such thought…

I definitely agree that we need to think more about what we take in. Like your tag line says – we need to live “with purpose.” I think that even includes entertainment.

It is getting harder and harder to know what to watch on TV / what to watch at the movies. Thankfully, you can read up on a movie ahead of time and make the decision on whether you want to be exposed to the language, content as described. TV is different — you expect a certain level of decency when you flip on the TV, but that level keeps decreasing so much that I rarely watch TV anymore — you can’t even flip channels without seeing something you could’ve done without! Movies like ‘Fireproof’ are wonderful ‘entertainment’. Don’t know what more Christians can do but support the good film makers by going to their movies. $$$ speaks support.

We got rid of our TV (antenna, cable etc.) last November. We were convinced of it after we were simply trying to watch the nightly news and the commercials kept us diving for the remote. Not that the news wasn’t horrid enough. Sadly shows that are even labeled “for children” are littered with commercials that aren’t “for children”! We now take that extra $45 per month (what we were paying for cable) and have a pizza/game night with the kids once per month!
