It’s all grass

January 31, 2009

grassTotally unrelated…as I was walking sleepily into the gym this morning, there were a couple of young women walking out.  Presumably from having been out all night…out all night while I was at home sleeping and lamenting the fact that I went to bed too late (at 9:50 p.m.).  I do believe I have officially reached middle age.

OK, so it’s all grass.

In order to make my workouts seem a little less horrible, I listen to sermons.  I particularly like John Piper because (1) the dude is consistently right on and (2) I think he pours every ounce of his being into his sermons and I figure if he’s pouring every ounce of his being into preaching, I can pour a few ounces into running.  I also like to multitask (spiritual and physical exercise in one fell swoop!).  And the time on that treadmill goes by a little faster.  (Let’s not overlook that.)

Anyway, this was my listen this morning.  So good.  My brief synopsis is this: Compared to the glory of God, everything in life–our money, our image, our possessions, our bodies, our country, our comforts, our technology, our intelligence, everything–is like grass.  It’s all gonna die.  And we’re gonna die.  And as soon as we do, we’re really going to understand how worthless it all was and more importantly, how worthless our pursuit of it all was.

I need to change some of my pursuits.
