Who said breastfeeding was easy?
September 6, 2008
Of all the things new mothers are surprised by, the fact that breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally seems to always be somewhere near the top of the list. That and the fact that you had no idea how much a baby would change your life. (OK, so maybe these are my top two.)
Anyway, breastfeeding. Talk about issues. Can I even tell you how many issues I’ve had with breastfeeding. No, I don’t think I can. All I can say is, it’s a system that works really well on paper, but in reality? Not so much.
I never heard much about breastfeeding before I had my first child and I think that’s because all the other new moms-to-be and I figured it just…happened. Oh we were poor, poor, ignorant souls.
So you have the kid (which again, works really well on paper, but in reality?). Anyway, you just give birth to this new human being and now you’ve got to keep it alive. Yes, that’s right, you hold life in your very hands. Or in this case, in your very breasts (I hate to be so graphic but it’s true) and that, my friends, is a big responsibility. Let’s just hope they work right.
Anyway, all this to say, I found this really great story from a woman who also was having a few “issues” and I just have to pass it on for I think any nursing mother will appreciate it. I apologize for those of you who aren’t nursing mothers (hi men), but consider it a gift to you. Because this my friends, is what really goes on Target bathroom stalls across America. And you just thought we were “freshening up.”

For as long as I’ve wanted to be a mother I’ve wanted to breast feed. I always knew that I’d be a nursing mother. I pictured myself, rocking my sweet baby in a rocking chair while she nursed. A heavenly glow would surround us. Disney birds would chirp outside of the window…(more)

I laughed out loud reading the article. It was definitely a “funny because it’s true” moment. I have been that woman in the stall before! It is strangely worth it to nurse, but definitely not the fairytale.
