I Gush. So Sue Me.

June 14, 2005

Perhaps you’ve wondered why the silence for the last 6 days. Well, I was away. My brother was rowing in the 2005 USRowing National Youth Invitational. In other words, the winners at this regatta are the best junior (i.e. high school) rowers in the nation.

Intermission: I just saw the most gigantic ant in the world crawling across our living room. This is particularly concerning since we suspect there are carpenter ants eating our house. (Well, I guess technically they don’t EAT the wood in the house, they just burrow in it. Whatever. The bottom line is, whatever they do, they make it fall down.) Anyway, so I see the ant and I say to my husband, “Uh oh, look at that huge ant.” He replies, “Let’s get Isaiah to eat it.” This is rip-roaringly funny. (If you don’t know why, read this post.)

OK, intermission over. Back to the story. So, we went to see my brother and his friend row. I’ve never been to a regatta (although I felt a bit snooty attending an event with a name like that). I know nothing about rowing, crew, sculling, sweeping, yada, yada, whatever. I did find the whole thing rather interesting. You stand at the side of the lake, waiting for the boats to show up from where they started a mile away. Consequently you only see the very end of the race, which is weird to me, unless you have binoculars and you can see them at the starting line. I had no such luck as I was so overwhelmingly nervous that each time I tried to look in the binoculars, I was shaking so hard I got seasick.

Anyway, I screamed my brains out because I like to win and like it when other people I like win. Apparently, my screaming was a little aggressive for such a dignified sport. Whatever.

The bottom line is that my brother and his friend won the bronze medal in the Junior Men’s Doubles–an outstanding feat for their first appearance at National’s and (only) their second year of rowing, not to mention the fact that they were competing against teams with quite a bit more experience. Way to go guys. You rule.

As you can see, my brother received some of the athletic prowess handed down from his sister. (That would be me.)

Oh, alright. So that was a lie. You can sue me for that too.
