The Grass is Always Greener

June 8, 2005

I used self-tanner today. Twice. The first dose offered just enough instant gratification that I decided to go for it again. Not sure if the second go-round was a good idea. I think I’m looking a little splotchy.

Anyway, it’s all about envy of the cookies.

I’m Dutch, Irish and Scotch. I’m so white I’m transparent. Not a pretty sight. Blinding really. And I hang out all day with my kids which is enough to make anyone jealous. They’re half African-American and have the most beautiful skin on the planet. Just say the word “sun” and those kids get darker.

And then there’s my husband, the king of nicknames. He’s got nicknames for nicknames. Each of our kids has about 4 nicknames, one of which is chocolate chip cookies. This is because they indeed look like chocolate chip cookies with their caramel brown skin and deep brown eyes. And they are certainly good enough to eat.

Anyway, my husband calls me a cookie too. A sugar cookie. And all I’ve got to say is, WHO WANTS TO BE A SUGAR COOKIE??!! NO ONE!! Thus my rendezvous with Coppertone. (Twice.)

But then I was thinking…

My daughter frequently asks, “Why can’t I have straight hair, mommy?”

My response is always the same: “Because when God made you, He thought to Himself, ‘I know just how I want her. I’ll make her exactly like this…’”

Hmmm…
