Welcome To My World

June 6, 2005

So, our family is enjoying a night out for dinner. The kids turn up their noses at most of the food in front of them. As usual.

“Would you like to try some rice & beans?”

“No! I don’t like it!” comes the reply, accompanied by the equally unattractive furrowed-brow look. It matters not, of course, that they’ve never tried rice & beans in their lives.

After the usual go-around about how they’ve never tried it but how they still don’t like it, our meal continues…

Until my son, age 2 1/2 says in a very proud voice, “I ate a bug!”

Uh-huh I think to myself. But then he turns to me, opens his mouth and yes indeed, I do in fact see wings and things in there.

I’m overcome by a weird mixture of horror at the thought (and sight) of it and respect for this kid who not only wonders what it would be like to eat a bug, but actually does it.

Meanwhile my husband has three things to say:

  1. “Ohhh, disgusting. How can he refuse perfectly good, edible food and then go and eat a bug. I just DO NOT get that.”
  2. “Well, at least he’s getting his protein somehow.”
  3. “Let’s just hope that bug died of natural causes.”

Yes, let’s.
