What About Us?
June 4, 2005
A report was just released about the treatment of the Quran by guards at Guantanamo Bay. There have been stories circulating about guards mishandling the Quran. According to the report, some stories are true and some have no evidence to support them.
I do think the Quran should be respected. Absolutely. What I find interesting, though, is the effect the stories have had on the world.
The story [that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet] stirred worldwide controversy, and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.
Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations…
And I have to wonder, would Christians react with equal passion for our faith? Not the majority of American Christians, I’m afraid. We like Christianity when it “works” for us.
No, we aren’t outraged when others disrespect our faith. How could we be? We disrespect it ourselves.
