men

What is it with men? It’s a phrase muttered among groups of women often. Personally, I think we do ourselves (not to mention men) a disservice by letting the words cross our lips. But alas, our culture makes it OK, almost expected.

Consider your basic popular sitcom. Take “Everybody Loves Raymond” for example. What’s the premise of the show? Wouldn’t you agree that it’s all about Ray looking like a complete and total idiot and his wife’s ability to make him look so? I’m afraid there would be little comedy if it weren’t for this simple reoccurring plot. And this isn’t the only show. And shows aren’t the only problem.

How often do you hear comments made by women about men like “He’s such a male!”? The implied characteristics are clueless, out-of-touch, insensitive, foolish, one-track minded (either sex or sports), stupid, dumb etc. And funny that most women spend a significant amount of time trying to attract men as though they can’t live without them.

It makes me wonder…is the goal to (a) attract a man for the purpose of trying to make him less idiotic, (b) get a man and then spend life making fun of him, or (c) find one of the extremely few men that are actually not “your typical male”?

Call me crazy, but I bet if we started treating men the way we’d like to be treated–with respect–we’d find ourselves in relationships with men who treat us likewise.
